Help from the Blogosphere

This time It's Like Having My Own Card Shop sent me 1 card for my 2013 Opening Day Mascots set.

YAY!! That's one more I don't have to track down!!

The Wilsons also sent along some wayward Phillies for my personals...

and...

The Bottalico/Rolen cards are awesome, first time I've seen them. they have a little burnished, pressed copper-looking insert plate in the center that adds a nice touch of shiny to the card, and they're numbered.
An just for the record, the On the Record Carlton is cool as well. I love the "mini-page" look of this 02 Don Russ design. Anything that has a newspaper print or magazine cover design is cool to me.

thanks for the cards Daniel!
Thanks for reading everybody,
have a GReat weekend!

Fan of Dawgbones...

Perhaps one of the best benefits to all of the Ginter madness infecting the blogosphere lately is the ability to trade/beg/borrow/or steal all you could want of the new stuff without the hassle of actually buying and busting packs.

Not having a whole lot of scratch for new cards this season, let alone buying a box (or case), I've been perusing each and every post, whether it be Gint-a-Cuffs or just be-cause.

This has allowed me to buy a complete base card set for my Phillies and a few extras for some of my other collections.

Enter Chris, over at Nachos Grande, he buys and busts a bunch of Ginter, selling off the extras to finance future Ginter goodness.

I struck a deal with him for three cards:

Mr. Worley is a former Phillie, as well as a current Twins.

Mr. Doerr was my very first TTM success, for which I will be eternally grateful.

and I just could not pass up a pin stripe from one of my boys, Mr. Lee. He had another steller performance against the dredded Mutts last night! (as both these teams have resided in 3rd place for most of the season, fighting damned hard for that 4th place slot!!)

Little did I know that my "GReat" deal would end up costing a good portion of his proceeds in postage!!
So I sent the additional $$ to cover that goof-up! Thanks for the cards Chris, it's always cheesey trading with you!

Introducing...

Your 2013 Allen & Ginter Phillies:

Loving the fact that they've included both Roberts and Bunning in this set. And you can't go wrong with a Schmidt card from any set in my book!

I have a couple of relics from Mr. Kruk, and with the inclusion of the three minis (plus the TOO awesome red-backed Howard mini from Dave's ever-so-generous break),

Will get a better scan when this lil puppy is in my grubby lil paws!!

I am about 25% of the way to the mini-set of Phils as well! All I need to finish my full-size Ginter Phils is the Across the Years Schmidt card that Mr. Dimwit has promised to set aside for me! Thanks Sam.

Even got one of the framed mini-relics from one of my favorite first basemen, Mr. Howard. And I managed to pick all of the above up off of eBay for about the cost of 1-1/2 jumbo packs! Including shipping! The seller had the best offer option available and I threw what I thought was a low-ball offer at them, only to have it accepted in less than 30 minutes!! I wonder how much lower they might have accepted??

My wife will be relieved to know that I will not be buying any retail (or hobby) packs of Ginter this season! It may be cheating to get my Ginter Phils this way, but I feel as though I'm saving a lot of money this way! And even more personal credit between me and the Missus if you catch my drift!!

First Ball game of the season...

So the missus took a little pity on me last night and accompanied your truly to my first baseball game of 2013. We went to downtown Norfolk to catch game 1 of the double header between the hometown Tides and the Gwinnett Braves.

 vs

.
We had pretty decent seats for the evening courtesy of our local One-Hour Heating and Cooling company. They contacted my wife last week and offered us tickets so we took them up on it.

The Tides ended up winning both games. I made an early deal with my wife since she is NOT a baseball fan at all that we would stay through the 7th inning stretch of game 1, then make a decision to stay for the entire game or head home. I did not realize that game 1 was only going to be 7 innings! So we caught the whole game! Our Tides belted 2 homers, each with a man on 2nd, defeating the Braves 4-1.

I really like the hometown flare that the Tides show our local military, the camo jerseys are awesome. Last night had an extra twist as the USS Roosevelt had a large contingent in the crowd. Our boys in blue camo traded traditional Tides headgear for CV-71 Roosevelt hats!! Too cool!

The view from our seats was GReat! The weather at 1st pitch was a very nice semi-cool 78 degrees and falling and partly cloudy as you can see. A very pleasant night for a baseball game.

Opening Day Base cards complete!!

In a more round about fashion than usual, I've discovered a new blog, The Raz Card Blog, run by Chris.
He and I were helping a fellow blogger finish off the 2013 Opening Day set for his son and struck up a trade between us.

He has helped me finish off the base cards for my set as well as traded me one of his blue parallels for my Phillies. He also included a bunch of inserts for that set as well, putting me well on my way to finishing this year's set off ahead of everything else.

He also included some extra Phillies from some of this year's other offerings:

and then there is this little beauty!! I've been wanting the Dealing Aces Phillies since I saw them earlier this year, and now I've got my first one out of the way! The only knock I'd give Topps on these would be the choice of color, Doc really should have been on the hearts or diamonds and red.

Now that's what I'm talking about. The red on the No-Hitters Halladay really pops with the pinstripes and Phillies cap! What a sharp looking card, and the other GQ Phillies set that I've been looking for as well.
These two cards were worth the trade alone!!

Thanks for them and the rest of the OD stuff too Chris! I'll be getting you something out this week in return for your kind offering here.

Stuck on Sales

So I've been hitting the sales at my local Targets this week, trying to finish out my 2013 Opening Day set.
Basically a 2 fer 1 special has me chasing out most of the missing cards. And I also picked up one lonely pack of 2013 Sticker Collection:

not a bad representation for my PCs with 3 out of 8, suffice it to say though, I'm not buying any more of these.
