something dodgey about today's post...

I finally managed to find a box of those big league minis figures that Topps has decided to torture us with this season. At $4.98 a pop, my wife would have shot me on site if I'd tried to sneak more than one in the shopping basket last week.

They come on figure per pack.
This photo shamelessly stolen from Napkin Doon's current Big Fun Game!!

and there is a checklist provided with each figure.

but the checklist versus a quick look on eBay shows there are variants that are not pictured on the checklist.

this make it easier to know. Hey this one's not pictured, so, it's a variant!!

so, which one of these buggers did I get? I gave you a hint with the post title...

and he is available for trade...

I'd like to have the Halladay and Mauer, and though I would not turn him down, the Howard is just a tad creepy looking to me (surprisingly they closely resemble the pictures on the checklist!):

there are two possibilities, as this is NOT a variant...

and without much further adieu:

yes, Mr. Kemp. I know there are a few Dodgers fans out there, as well as Kemp fans, so hit me up with your best offer.

thanks for looking,

A Wally-world O.D. jumbo...

Let's see what the Wally World edition of the jumbos has for us:

Two Phils, not bad for starters...

A Blue Jays mascot and a Hamels finish this jumbo pack off very nicely. And you're not mis-counting. Walmart charges an extra 50 cents but gives 27 cards instead of Target's 24...

the 2nd jumbo

jumbo pack #2 of Opening Day:

There we go, a Harper and a Phillie!! And I don't mind the Pence card either... a few more towards set completion.

and I think it's only fitting that my first Phillies blue would be a duplicate of my first Phillies base!! 3 Phillies in a pack is 3 more towards the team set... though I am trying for the entire O-D set. And 2 for 2 with an OD Stars card in this pack as well. Curiously enough, the Ballpark Fun cards from these 2 packs were #s 23 and 24!!

More Opening Day

picked up 2 more jumbo packs of Opening Day:

Sox and Yanks, Sox and Yanks. Seems like I'm destined to pull those two teams in multitudes this year!! Good thing I collect them!

Nice Burnett blue. He managed to plunk Rollins for the game winning RBI the other night!! and you can't go wrong with a #7 player OD-Stars card either!!

There was a show...

this past weekend near my home in Virginia Beach. I made plans to hit them up and see if I could find anything worth-while for a trade I'm trying to make. Let's see what I found:

This was a freebie, given by one of the local collectibles shops in the area. He wanted to make sure I got at least 1 Red Sox player for the day! In support of the arrest made on Friday, I wore one of my Red Sox shirts, not thinking that I was going to end up at the card show!! And I didn't have the heart to tell him I was a Phillies fan. As you can see, I did get 1 Phillie card as well as a bunch of the other sports that I don't collect! If you need/want any of the other cards, feel free to drop me a line.

I did find a few Phillies chromes and parallel borders for my collection, as well as the Mr. Met mascot card from this year's Opening Day set.

and I got the Phanatic to go with Mr. Met. Can't go wrong with a little vintage. Snagged an Ibanez and an Upton jersey card for those PCs. Couldn't pass up the John Cain predictor card. And I picked up two Giants autographed cards. One or both of these will be headed west in a trade soon.

More Series 1

also picked up another rack pack of Series 1 while we were out:

The Tabata card seems a little comical. And was Cozart out or safe?

still like the emeralds, but would love to trade for a Phillies version, hint, hint, hint...
Hairston?? Looks like a Wright spotlight to me!!

It seems as though I am destined to pull Giants diecuts and Ripkin histories. This is the second San Fran diecut I've pulled and the Ripkin s a duplicate though the first one may not be the shiny version, this one is. and then there's the Phillies:

Another hot pack!! I knew I should have picked up more cards! Very cool rack pack! Though it seems Tyler is wearing the wrong uniform!!

More Opening Day...

Were out on the motorcycles yesterday and ran across a Target that we don't frequent much and picked up another jumbo pack.

not too bad for starters... a pair of Uptons, pretty nifty trick they pulled the other night, back to back homers to win the game!

another lenticular insert. I really do like them even though they don't scan too well. We have now hit on a couple of doubles with this jumbo pack, I think I have three base doubles now, and then there's:

woo hoo!! A veritable Phillies hot pack!! As for their performance over the week-weekend, at least they did not get swept, and they almost pulled off a back to back come from way behind to win the game. Frandsen's walk-off double was very sweet!

I'm behind the times...

As most of my regular readers know, I'm a big "Get Fuzzy" fan. and have a daily calender on my desk each year. This year is no exception. That being said, I often do not read them every day...
or even every other day...
ok, the current day showing is Thursday, February 28th!!

this does not bother me as much as a few of the more OCD people in my office. I rather enjoy catching up with the fellows every now and them when the mood strikes me for something funny.

In my latest catch-up session, I ran across another baseball related strip that I just can't help but share:

it's kind of hard to tell whether Mr. Conley is a Sawx or a Yanks fan, but it's generally funny!

I hit a wall

or at least part of a wall...

I picked up another little military hero last week, and he came with a part of a wall:

1st Desert Camo! Pretty cool! I love the military and appreciate all they do, each and every day.

I saw these the other day whilst perusing eBay and it about sums it up:

got to see about adding them to my next riding vest. Bought the main patch this week.

More Opening Day

2 retail packs this time.

Got these Tuesday night at the other Target near my house. They did not have any of the jumbo packs that I prefer. The jumbos cost about a penny less per card than the single 7 card packs.

Another pie in the face card. kinda MEH about these, not great but not bad either. Another GReat action shot of Davis, picture him chanting, "See the ball, Be the ball, Catch the ball..."

The first of the Upton brothers, really wish they'd gone somewhere other than Atlanta... makes it difficult to root for the hometown favorites. And we have our second duplicate card with the Choo. But once again, it's base vs. Blue parallel. Betcha Dominguez ain't too happy with that photo!

On a side note, It's nice to see Topps did not carry over the old "packs with an insert card contain fewer cards" trick from the flagship to Opening day. Which brings us to our last card from the second pack, and our first Phillie base card:

Drum Roll Please...

Yep, Mr. Opening Day pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, Cole Hamels.
Wish you could've won that one Cole, but we've got 161 more shots to go!
and a snapshot of the card back for you:

Well ain't that nice! only four thousand and some strikes to go for the record... really?

2013 Opening Day, the real post

OK, so I did manage to get my hands on two jumbo packs of 2013 Opening Day. and NO, there weren't half a pack of mascots in there!!

But there were 48 unique baseball cards in them (there was a duplicate, but it was a blue parallel)
so what do we get for our $6 and change?

Wow, 3 pair! That's a winning hand almost any day! Like the action shot of Venable, especially since it also shows the inbound ball as opposed to just diving for empty air.

So, in the first jumbo, we get 2 Twins, 2 Orioles, 2 D-Backs, 2 Angels, 2 Reds and 3 Giants. Not too shabby! I still like the 3D cards, and pulling Posey is GReat! I also really like the Blue parallels and am looking for a team set from at least my Phils.

The second jumbo seems to be looking up, literally! Morrison, Choo and Martinez are all looking to the skies. I see two Sac-Flies and a possible homer...

The Medlin is the first "duplicate" from this year, but matching the base with the blue shiny, I'll take that any day! And I did actually pull one mascot with the Twins. I really do like the mascot cards!
But still no base Phillies from any purchased packs...

Did somebody say, "MINIs!!"

A few weeks back, Jeff from over at 2 X 3 Heroes, bought a huge selection of  minis. He was most gracious in sorting and then posting the extras. Many of which fell right in my want list pile.

a few emails and a couple of days later, I get a generous package in the mail.

He was also kind enough to wander through the rest of my lists and knocked quite a few cards off of those as well.

and he even hit the remainder of the 2012 team cards. I am now missing only 4 of the base cards and the three Phillies Minis listed there as well.

thanks for the help there Jeff. I am still working on a return package to send your way soon.

The best Pack I've never opened!!

So, I finally managed to get my hands on some Opening Day. My favorite Target had exactly 1 jumbo pack left by the time I got over there on Saturday morning. I could not wait to get into work this morning and scan those puppies in.

Lets start with the base cards:

not too bad, some decent players in that group.
I even managed to pull two of those blue bordered beauts as well:

heck yeah! Two Phillies for my collection!! this is a pretty decent pack!!

but the inserts is where this pack shined! I managed to pull over half the pack in inserts:

DAMN!! a Mascots hot pack!!! now I only need half the mascots to finish the set!!

now you're thinking, how lucky can a person get. I did manage to pull one more insert out of this pack:

The Rangers Mascot Auto!!! These are extremely hard to pull, but as he's from a team I don't collect, he is for trade, but I will only accept a Unicorn for this one. Yep a real live genuine unicorn!!

did you forget what today is?
Happy April Fool's day everybody!
